2012 Olympic stadium progressing well in April 2009
Alright then, rather late mid-April. I took the pic on Sunday on a glorious, well, late mid-morning. I’m grateful to reader Worktimesurfer for telling me via a comment at my previous post on this theme that the white metal strut things are called “trusses”. As you can see, there are now more trusses in place than there were in mid-March. I don’t believe we can pretend this isn’t progress. I can’t believe I’ve thought about a truss that way.
Meanwhile, on the legacy front the Mayor and the government have moved to the next stage of their united to push to found a world class higher education and research facility on the site. This document (pdf) compiled with the (deep breath) Higher Education Funding Council for England, seeks to crystalise their thinking and scare up support for future partnerships with classy universities, be they London ones or located elsewhere.
Three possible specialisms are being mooted: broadly, sports science, digital and media and green technology. The goal is for these to be of international reknown, but also rooted in their neighbourhood. The new Ravensbourne College, preparing for relocation from Chislehurst to a spot adjacent to the Dome, is thought a possible good model for a new kind of HE institution. If all the public dosh being spent on 2012 is going end up justified, we need this kind of project to work. Wish it well.
